Pointools Headlines at Bentley Conference

Point clouds - the 3D data points collected by laser scanning devices - were a hot topic at this year's Be Together Conference in Philadelphia. During the technology keynote, Bhupinder Singh, SVP of Bentley Software, presented Bentley's product vision for the adoption of the Pointools Vortex engine - for referencing point clouds inside Bentley applications. Afterwards, Tony Rogers, co-founder and Director of Pointools was joined by Paul DiGiacobbe of HNTB - a large Pointools user - and Bentley's Product Director for MicroStation, Chris Bober, to share more detail. Both presentations highlighted the value users realize by incorporating point cloud models during the design and delivery of infrastructure projects. read more..

Pointools in Rhino to BIM

Reconstructing Buildings from Physical Facilities into Virtual Realities. Clark Construction uses 3D laser scanning and Pointools in Rhino to convert a Veterans Affairs Medical Center building into BIM.
After the scans were aligned in PolyWorks, they were brought into Rhino using the Pointools plug-in to create engineered geometry-based models. Then rooms that were spatially related, such as the boiler and chiller rooms, were aligned together for easier inclusion into the final BIM. The final CAD models were exported in DXF format, suitable for importation into NavisWorks, the software package Clark was using to construct the BIM. read more..
